This A-to-Z guide teaches you how to master the selective color effect, making one color stand out in a black and white video for a stunning, cinematic look.
The Color Pop effect (also known as selective color) is a powerful visual technique that isolates a single color while desaturating the rest of the image. It's a fantastic way to create a high-impact, artistic look that immediately grabs your audience's attention.
Instantly focuses the viewer's eye on the most important part of your scene.
Gives your video a professional, high-end look often seen in films and music videos.
Use color to highlight key objects, characters, or themes in your narrative.
This visually striking effect is highly effective at stopping the scroll on social media platforms.
Follow these four steps to create the selective color effect in CapCut.
Import your video clip into the timeline. Select the clip and use the 'Copy' function from the toolbar to create an identical duplicate directly after the original.
Select the duplicated clip and tap 'Overlay'. This will move the second clip to a new layer directly above the first one. Align it perfectly with the clip below.
Select the top (overlay) clip. Go to 'Adjust' > 'Saturation' and drag the slider all the way down to -50. This will make the entire top clip black and white.
With the B&W overlay still selected, go to 'Cutout' > 'Chroma Key'. Use the color picker to select the color you want to keep (e.g., a red dress). Adjust 'Intensity' and 'Shadow' until only that color is removed from the top layer, revealing the original color from the layer below.
